Information Regarding Choice of District School
** Please note that North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools are NOT part of the state’s school choice program. **
Dear Parents and Guardians:
In the past, parents and students of the North Hunterdon High School sending districts were able to select either North Hunterdon High School or Voorhees High School as their school of choice. Choice of district high school was never an option for the Voorhees sending districts. As our student population continued to grow and our two high schools reached, and exceeded, 90% capacity, the option of choosing Voorhees was eliminated in the 2005-2006 school year for the North Hunterdon sending districts (Bethlehem Township, Clinton Township, Franklin Township, Lebanon Borough and Union Township – Clinton Town students still have choice as they are classmates at Clinton Public School with Glen Gardner students, who attend Voorhees).
According to Board of Education Policy 5111.1, the superintendent shall grant school choice until the school population in the building reaches 90% capacity. Each October, the superintendent shall notify the community on whether the option to choose a high school is allowed for the next school year.
The Board of Education has approved a revision to Policy 5111.1 related to students from Clinton Public School. Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, ALL students attending Clinton Public School will be able to choose which high school, North Hunterdon or Voorhees, they want to attend. This applies to students residing in the Town of Clinton and Glen Gardner.
Based on current enrollment and how classrooms are being utilized, both North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools are above 90% functional capacity. Therefore, choice of high school for all sending districts (except Town of Clinton students) is NOT an option for the 2013-2014 school year.
If one of the following exceptions relates to your incoming freshman and you would like him/her to attend Voorhees High School instead of North Hunterdon High School, please send me a request for this change by April 30th:
- A family already has a student attending Voorhees High School and wants to keep siblings together
- A family had a student attend Voorhees High School and wishes to maintain a continuity of tradition by having siblings attend the same alma mater
- Fulfillment of the requirements of an IEP
- For a mental health issue
We will continue to review our facilities and capacity annually, and will update this website each October. If you have any questions, please contact me at 908-735-2846 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
